Dentures Treatment

A denture is a removable appliance to replace one more missing teeth. There are two broad categories of dentures: Partial denture and complete denture. As the name suggests, Complete dentures replace all the missing teeth whereas partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth with some teeth still remaining in the oral cavity.

Partial Denture

For many years, partial dentures have been used to replace groups of teeth or a few teeth scattered across upper or lower jaw. There are a variety of partial dentures available depending upon requirements of individual patient. All partial dentures attach to remaining teeth and have a gum-colored portion meant to blend into the existing gum, with prosthetic teeth to replace missing teeth.

Complete Denture

Complete dentures are similar to partial dentures in fabrication and appearance. The only difference is that complete dentures replace full set of teeth whereas partial dentures replace only a few teeth.

Advantages and Disadvantages of dentures

Types of crowns vary depending upon the material used in their fabrication.

Advantages
  • Dentures replace one or more missing teeth
  • Provide esthetic and functional improvement for people with missing teeth
  • They are cheaper to make compared to other teeth replacement options especially if multiple teeth are involved
  • Easier to make adjustments and additions to plastic dentures
Disadvantages
  • Dentures must be removed and cleaned frequently to maintain optimum oral health
  • Dentures may move a lot during eating and speaking and may make it almost impossible to chew harder foods.
  • To accommodate the limitations, denture wearers may have to change their diet.
  • Ill fitting dentures may create sores and pains in the mouth due to constant movement during function
